Engagement Photo Tips

Welcome back!!  Hope everyone had a nice, relaxing holiday with family and friends?  All of the NQIGs took some time to unplug and step away from the computer – a welcome refresh.  But now, we’re back to the grind!

One trend I saw more than any other this holiday season has been – engagements!!  I swear, I ran out of fingers counting all of the engagement announcements on my Facebook news feed.  Since there are so many newly-engaged couples out there, I figure this is as perfect time as ever to discuss engagement photos!

While Stephen and I got engaged in May, we held off on taking engagement photos for a few months.  We weren’t sure we wanted to do them at all, and then by the time we decided we wanted them, it was late October, and we urgently needed a photo for our Save the Date.  We scheduled a shoot with our wedding photographer, John Reilly of John Reilly Photography and went out to the lake to shoot for a few hours early one morning.  Having now been through the process, I learned SO much, and wanted to share some of the important tips I picked up:

What To Wear: maybe the toughest choice you’ll have to make.  What’s most important – wear something that feels like you.  If you’d never wear the outfit again, that probably means it’s not right for you.  I’d also recommend looking through old photos and taking note of what colors you photograph best in (I broke this rule – pastels wash me out, but I just loved the sweater I wore so much, that I ran with it).

Lighting: this is most important if you’re taking your photos outdoors.  If so – try and get a sense for when the lighting is best in that area.  John knew that at the lake in Chicago, the best light of the day is early in the morning, to catch the sunrise coming up over the water.  He was right – it made SUCH a difference.

Do What Works: when it comes to doing your hair and makeup, I’d suggest sticking to what you know looks good.  Unless you’re confident that whatever change you’re making is going to look good on camera, don’t risk it.  This is another mistake I made.  With our shoot so early in the morning, I got a blow out the night before and then re-curled it that morning.  What I mistakenly ignored was the fact that my hair never looks good after being slept on.  It wasn’t a deal breaker, but something I’d do over if I could go back.

Relax: probably the most important thing to do!  Unless you do photo shoots often, the whole experience (especially for the guy) will feel slightly awkward.  But if you go in knowing that, you’ll be better equipped to deal with it.  The night before (and against his will) I made Stephen practice some goofy poses (dip me!  look longingly into my eyes!).  It sounds silly, but we ended up doing all of those things during the shoot, so we already had a little practice.  And what do you know, our dip picture (which is kitschy in the best possible way) ended up being one of our favorites.
